Good Medical Equipment Planning develops coordination between professionals involved in the building and renovation of new and existing healthcare facilities. This is important to your organization, whether you, or your client, is a major hospital, clinic or primary healthcare provider.
While our focus will cover all aspects of your clinical FF&E needs, a review of clinical work flow and processes will become an important factor in eliminating waste and determining best practice. This will influence design layout and, in turn, improve equipment planning and buying decisions.
Our role as your Medical Equipment Planner is not only about ‘what’ equipment needs to go ‘where’, but to become an integral part of your team. We want to help deliver a safer, more effective healing and work environment for patients, families and staff.
Capital projects have many diverse items that must be considered. We will continuously interact with provider, end-users and vendors in an efficient and detailed way. We want to assure that you will have the critical information you need at the right time to help eliminate delays and costly changes later.
"Having worked as a nurse, equipment representative and hospital furniture distributor, Susan understands how healthcare facilities operate and the project planning process." - RMKM Architecture
Equipment Planner/Resource: Over the past few years, I have worked as a Senior Medical Equipment Planner on a broad range of projects, from major & government facilities to small community hospitals.
In many cases, I have found that the failure to ‘get in there’ early with some basic planning in certain key areas has created frustration leading to wasted time and money later.
Everyone operates under financial constraints and often there isn’t the staff available to take on these important initial steps that will help the team work more smoothly with management, architects & engineers, as the project starts to take shape.
As an independent contractor, I can step in and help add necessary resources, without long-term commitments of adding full-time employees.
Among those issues you might need to focus on are:
Review and document ASE/SSE equipment (new & existing)
Establish client policies for purchasing/leasing new equipment
Review and research new technology
Coordinating communication with potential vendors including field trips and mock-ups

What they’re saying about Susan…
“Ms. Rachtman’s skills are outstanding. She addressed several of the complex medical equipment systems in the hospital. Specifically, we applied her skills to acute care and surgical care areas of the new facility. In her role as the senior medical planner, she conducted “user group” and key person work sessions to define equipment requirements.
General Dynamics consistently received high praise for her work. She was repeatedly sought after to extend the range of her work to additional hospital departments and services. General Dynamics looks forward to engaging Ms. Rachtman on all future initial outfitting projects. She is a highly valued resource and colleague.”
Senior Director, General Dynamics Information Technology
“Susan's background as a healthcare professional positions her exceptionally well as a consultant. She's able to work directly with a client to define all requirements within a hospital or clinic setting and specify what is needed for effective patient care and accreditation compliance.
“She takes the time to research equipment at all levels of detail to provide the very best solution at the optimal cost and works with vendors and suppliers to ensure what is needed is delivered. I would have been lost without the support which she provided for the new UNM Dental Services Clinic. This 17,000 square foot facility is a state of the art clinic which will have the first licensed dental surgery center in New Mexico.”

effective patient care
“I highly recommend Susan Rachtman. I can’t begin to imagine being able to successfully complete our new hospital’s equipment and furniture planning, procurement, and installation without Susan’s leadership, experience, and hard work.
“This would have taken a full time person, one which does not exist in a rural community. Together with representatives from each department, Susan helped to identify our needs and to fulfill them. She also took on the task of working with numerous vendors and installers to ensure quality of work and product. We could not have done this well without her services!”

"Ms. Rachtman brings a unique perspective to her specialty. Having worked as a nurse, medical equipment representative and hospital furniture distributor, she understands how healthcare facilities operate and the project planning process. When working with end users during equipment selection she quickly understands the process and often makes recommendations to improve operations. Susan is familiar with many LEAN strategies and is certified in Evidence Based Design.
Medical equipment planning and selection is often a complex process. She knows how to lead the users and management each step of the way, provides timely information and guides decisions. As with any project, equipment cost management is essential and Susan can provide real-time cost analysis.
Susan is a qualified Medical Equipment Planning consultant and I would recommend her without hesitation. She is knowledgeable, responsive and a pleasure to work with. Let me know if I can provide you with any further information."
